SOWETO ARTWEEK
Sept 21-25, 2016 : The African identity in the dynamic creative economy
The third annual Soweto Art Week (SAW) is set to take place 21-25 September 2016, in the vibrant, bustling township of Soweto.
This year’s showcase is centred on the main theme of exploring African identity.
Featuring works by Mduduzi Twala, Nathi Buthelezi as well as Sguzu Press, Soweto Art Week 2016 seeks to explore the complexities of African identity within a rapidly changing art landscape.
The multiple voices and different mediums will converge into a smorgasbord of contemporary art that aims to tackle, challenge and explore the changing narrative of African artists.
Soweto Theatre in Jabulani and Eyethu Gallery in Mofolo will host a multitude of artists throughout the week as they express what it means to be an African artist today.
Featured visual artists, Twala, Buthelezi as well as printmaking collective Sguzu Press will be exhibiting more than 30 works throughout Soweto Art Week, while various performance artists, poets and musicians will also be part of this year’s programme.
Buthelezi’s work, which largely depicts facial expressions in multiple forms, is underpinned by his desire to use his work as a tool for transforming societies morally, intellectually and spiritually.
